Rummaging through Secret Files Truth, Half-Truth, and Non-Truthby Lavinia Stan, Department of Political Science.  The secret archives compiled by the communist political police forces during 1945-1989 have been publicly available for some time in Central and Eastern Europe. Millions of ordinary citizens and researchers have accessed these archives and read the secret documents. This lecture presents my personal take on the secret files. Through examples drawn from my own file, and the files compiled on others, I argue for the importance of contextualizing the recorded information and understanding the reasons behind the secret police’s targeting of “persons of interest.” The lecture draws lessons from my personal journey into the secret archives and my own monitoring by the Securitate.
